San Diego Chapter Holds First Women In Defense Symposium
Where in San Diego could you find the highest-ranking female Marine, the first woman to lead a combat strike group, an award-winning journalist wounded in a car bombing in Iraq, and a former Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs? On February 18, 2009, these women and more than 220 participants gathered for the 1st Annual Women in Defense (WID) Symposium at the beautiful Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego.
The day-long agenda included panel presentations on women’s leadership roles in combat and humanitarian operations, strategic trends, and public-private technology partnerships.
“This event brought together leaders in their field, who happen to be women, who support combat and humanitarian operations as they relate to our national strategy,” said Rear Admiral Carol Pottenger, Commander, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command.
Patricia Ward, Vice President of WID's San Diego Chapter, and Senior Associate at Booz Allen, founded and served as chairperson of this inaugural event. “We recognized a unique opportunity to bring together leaders from military, government, industry and academia to network, raise awareness of Women In Defense, grow and diversify our membership and secure the operating capital to establish the chapter’s mentorship and scholarship programs. The event surpassed our expectations in achieving these goals.”
“Symposiums such as this one are very important and empowering,” said Sergeant Major Barbara Titus-Tention, the first female Sergeant Major of Marine Corps Installations West.
Sponsors of the event included: Booz Allen Hamilton (Title Sponsor), Boeing, SAIC, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Indus Technology, Tele-Consultants, TechFlow, G Software Systems, DCS, Epsilon Systems Solutions, KrosWise, and SRA International.
Women in Defense is a non-profit professional organization that provides its members with opportunities for professional development and networking, cultivating the advancement of women leaders working in all aspects of national security.
